Editorial Policy
Dehumidifier Advisor reviews dehumidifiers for specific spaces, starting with basements. This page explains how picks are chosen and what affects them.
How picks are chosen
Each pick starts with the manufacturer’s published specifications, checked against at least one retailer listing. This information is coupled with owner reviews to determine the best products. The site does not run its own tests.
Specifications and prices
Specifications come from manufacturer sheets and retailer listings. When a figure is not published, the review says so and leaves it out. Prices appear near the top of each review and change often, so the retailer’s page shows the current price.
How the Advisor Score works
Each reviewed unit gets an Advisor Score from 1 to 5. It is the average of four criteria, each scored from 1 to 5 using published specifications. Price is not scored, because it changes often.
Cold tolerance uses the lowest rated operating temperature. A rating of 38°F or lower scores 5, 39 to 41°F scores 4, 42 to 45°F scores 3, 46 to 55°F scores 2, and anything higher scores 1.
Coverage uses the manufacturer’s rated area. A rating of 4,500 sq ft or more scores 5, 3,000 to 4,499 sq ft scores 4, 2,000 to 2,999 sq ft scores 3, 1,000 to 1,999 sq ft scores 2, and anything smaller scores 1.
Drainage starts at 3 for a continuous-drain port, adds 1 when a hose comes in the box, and adds 1 for a tank of 3 gallons or more. A unit without a drain port starts at 1.
Warranty scores 3 for one year, 4 for two years, and 5 for three years or longer. Anything under one year scores 1.
The average is rounded to one decimal place, and a score is recalculated when a published specification changes.
